We recently completed a gopher tortoise relocation project in Ocala, Florida for a regional land developer preparing a 50-acre site for future construction. The project required the safe excavation of 25 burrows and the relocation of 13 gopher tortoises, each of which was successfully transported to a certified recipient site.
All work was performed in accordance with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) regulations, ensuring compliance with state law while protecting this threatened species.
Project Overview
This project was conducted on a 50-acre property located in Ocala, Florida. A local land developer contracted Gopher Tortoise Services to assess and manage the presence of gopher tortoises prior to land clearing.
After conducting a formal site inspection, we confirmed multiple active burrows. Due to the scale of the site and the number of tortoises, machine excavation was required to safely and efficiently relocate the animals.
The Challenge
- 50-acre development site with mixed vegetation and sandy soils
- 25 burrows excavated
- 13 active gopher tortoise burrows spread across multiple acres
- Excavation required the use of machinery while minimizing disruption to the surrounding habitat
- Project was scheduled for completion within two days to align with internal timelines and resource planning
Our Gopher Tortoise Relocation Process
Burrow Identification and Survey
The team began by surveying and flagging all active gopher tortoise burrows using FWC-approved guidelines.
Machine Excavation
Due to the depth and density of the burrows, mechanical excavation equipment was used under the supervision of trained personnel. This allowed us to safely recover all 13 gopher tortoises with minimal risk to the animals.
Transport to Recipient Site
Each tortoise was transported to a licensed FWC-approved recipient site and released into a protected habitat suitable for long-term survival.
